Picking a Medical Marijuana Strain

(While this post speaks specifically towards the medical use of marijuana, the information and effects apply to recreational cannabis as well.)

Spending the day dealing with the pain and or nausea of any of the many ailments that can be treated with medical marijuana sucks. Sometimes, it can be down right impossible to even get out of bed. Finding sweet relief in medical marijuana can feel like a god send to anyone who has tried multiple conventional medicines. But how do you know which strain is right for you?

Not all Medical Marijuana Strains Are Created Equal.

Back in the day, people used to say weed was weed, but nowadays there is truly a science and an art to growing the mighty cannabis plant. If you don’t believe me, then take a look at the big bear city menu of different types of weed that is readily available. However, most of the time cannabis is broadly classified by its strains. One of the first things you should know is that strains can be broken down into 2 main strain groups. Cannabis Sativa and Cannabis Indica. Each has its own properties and reacts differently in your body. Now, truth be told, everyone reacts differently to marijuana. The same strain, even batch, of weed can have completely different effects on two different people. However, strains are very important to create CBD products with different intensities and strengths. For instance, some of the best strains for rosin and CBD concentrates can be Cherry Abacus Hemp Flower, Lifter Kief, etc. A thorough research can help you understand the science behind it.

Cannabis Sativa Strains

Generally speaking, Sativa strains are higher in THC content. That’s the chemical that gives marijuana is psychological effects. Since it has such an effect on the brain, Sativas are usually called a cerebral weed. These strains can make some people feel more focused, creative or energetic. Some people like these strains as a wake and bake alternative or helper to the morning cup of coffee. Sometimes though, if your pain is severe enough you might need something a little stronger.

Cannabis Indica Strains

Most patients report that Indica medical marijuana strains work far better at relieving pain. They usually have a more balanced chemical makeup, or even tend to be higher in CBDs. CBDs step-up the pain killing properties of THC while keeping it’s psychoactive properties under control. Other medicinal properties of CBDs include anti-inflammatory, anti-anxiety, anti-oxidant, and anti-convulsant. Studies have found that CBDs can reduce the growth of cancer cells. These awesome pain fighting super-powers come at a price. Often times Indica will make people feel tired or sleepy.

An easy way to remember the differences in the strains is Indica sounds like “In Da Couch”, seriously, someone told me that a while ago and I use it to remember the difference to this day.

Best of both marijuana worlds

Send in the hybrids! Hybrid strains try and combine the best of both plant types. These can be separated into Indica dominant or Sativa dominant varieties. As the name implies, the characteristics of one plant or the other are stronger than the other in hybrids. They can give you the pain-fighting power of Indicas without feeling sleepy. Or give you the focus and creativity that comes with a Sativa and still fight that chronic neck pain or nausea. You can get cannabis strains, concentrates, and other products that have better effectiveness by looking for a cannabis dispensary in your locality or online (for instance, you can search for lakewood dispensary) depending on your preference.

Hope that helps you understand the differences in medical marijuana that is available to you. Hopefully it gives you the confidence to try some new strains or even some hybrids. If you want to narrow it down even farther, check out the strain explorer at Leaf.ly it can help you narrow down your ideal strain and don’t forget, when in doubt, don’t forget to ask our bud tenders. Let us know if there is a strain you’d like to see in our stores.

BEGINNERS GUIDE TO MEDICAL CANNABIS – CHOOSING THE RIGHT STRAIN

Choosing the right strain of medical cannabis can be confusing at first with so many different and occasionally unusual names – the strain names are not always representative of the desired medicinal effects. This being said, it is much easier to decide what your desired effects are before you decide which strain to go with. To make things easier we have split the effects into two categories: HEAD and BODY.

Most cannabis strains effect your HEAD or brain within minutes after medicating. The effect either consists of a heavy and foggy feeling, or a clear and active feeling and can be classified on a scale of 1-7. with number 1being heavy and foggy, and 7 being the clearest and most active . Head effects may start sooner than body effects, but tend to wear off quicker.

The BODY or physical effect usually creeps in about 5 to 15 minutes after the “head effect”. This effect can vary from being relaxing and sleepy, to being uplifting and energetic. We can also apply the 1-7 scale to the “body effects”, with 1 being the most relaxing and 7 being the most uplifting. Body effects usually take longer to set in but tend to last longer than head (mental) effects.

Here are some examples of how to use our system. To simplify things we have made seven categories of the most common kinds of medicinal relief provided by cannabis: 1 being the heaviest Indica and 7 being the clearest Sativa. Depending on which category, or desired effect you wish to achieve, you can use the scale to find out which type of medicine you are looking for and suggested strains of that kind.

Type 1: Long lasting physical relief with a heavy and intense head effect. This kind of medicine is known asHeavy Indica, and is recommended for sleep, relaxation and pain related issues. Here are some examples of some strains with Heavy Indica attributes: MK Ultra, Grand Daddy Purple, Peak 19, Romulan, Ogre, Hash Plant and Afghani Goo.

Type 2: Long lasting physical relief with a clear and easy to function on head effect. This kind of medicine is known as Clear Indica, and is recommended for day time physical relief. Here are some examples of some strains with Clear Indica attributes: Sensi Star, Blackberry Kush, Northern Lights, Morning Star, Bubba Kush, Snow Cap and Shiva.

Type 3: A physical and mental balance that is more on the heavy side. This kind of medicine is known as a Heavy Hybrid, and is recommended for patients seeking pain relief or relaxation that is not too drowsy. Here are some examples of some strains with Heavy Hybrid attributes: Sage and Sour, Blueberry, White Rhino, Grape Ape, Champagne, Purple Kush and Cotton Candy.

Type 4: An even balance of Head and Body effects. This kind of medicine is known as a Even Hybrid, and is recommended for patients who don’t want to be too active or too drowsy. Here are some examples of some strains with Even Hybrid attributes: S.A.G.E., Northern Lights X Haze, Purple Skunk, Cali-O, Bubblegum, Silver Haze and Cherry Pie.

Type 5: An even balance of head and body effect which is more on the clear side. This kind of medicine is known as a Clear Hybrid, and is recommended for patients looking for a balance of Head and Body that is a little bit more on the clear side. Here are some examples of strains with Clear Hybrid attributes: Blue Dream, Cali-O, Odyssey, Bubbleberry, Super Silver Haze, AK-47 and White Widow.

Type 6: An uplifting body effect alongside some strong physical and mental relief. This kind of medicine is known as Heavy Sativa, and is recommended for patients looking for an Intense and uplifting Body with a Heavy head effect. Here are some examples of strains that have Heavy Sativa attributes: OG Kush, Cheese, Trainwreck, Sour Diesel, Headband, Jack Frost and Skunk #1.

Type 7: An uplifting and clear effect without a physical side to it. This type of medicine is known as Clear Sativa and is recommended for patients who are looking for a Clear Head with little or no Physical effects that is easy to function on. Here are some examples of strains that have Clear Sativa attributes: Kali Mist,Strawberry Kush, Old Mother Sativa, Durban Poison, Jack Herer, Purple God and Power Plant.

One very important factor in choosing the right medicine for yourself is that each strain has a ceiling or limit to the amount and type of cannabinoids that can be received by your body at a certain time. This is why you gain a tolerance faster to certain strains and others seem to medicate the same way for longer. By choosing to use different strains, about three of four, that you can rely on, it is easier to keep your cannabinoid receptors fresh and ready to be activated by the next type of medicine you are using. This will help you conserve your medicine and get the maximum effect from it. Having a few strains to medicate with can also help to reach the desired cannabinoid balance you are looking for. Certain websites like West Coast might provide you with products where you could Order Edibles Online for medical treatments. It is also worth mentioning that accurately estimating cannabis effects must be treated with some subjectivity. Each patient has an individual reaction to each type of medicine tried, and experimentation with different types of strains is essential for the new patient.

We are learning so much more about this wonderful plant all the time. We now know other aspects of cannabis such as the flavor (terpenes and flaviniods) also contributes to the effect. Remember, “the nose knows” – So trust your instincts and keep a personal cannabis journal to note how certain strains affected you. In very little time, you’ll be a pro at finding the strains that suit.

Thanks from Positive Vibrations for learning with me, and also thanks to berkeleypatientscare.com for all this wonderfully useful information and keep up the great work your doing.

Understanding Cannabis Testing: A Guide to Cannabinoids and Terpenes

As the medical and recreational cannabis markets continue their steady climb toward legitimacy, the demand for lab-tested products climbs alongside it. Cannabis testing is the scientific process of measuring different chemicals and compounds in the product. They can measure beneficial constituents like cannabinoids and terpenes, or not-so-desirable contaminants such as pesticides, mold, and residual solvents. Research is now showing that strains exhibit different compound profiles, unique “fingerprints” built by a specific composition of cannabinoids and terpenes.
Leafly has teamed up with Steep Hill Halent to bring you these Strain Fingerprints, which help to show how each strain is, to an extent, a special snowflake. Looking at these graphics, you may recognize some chemical compounds like THC and CBD, but many people are not sure what other cannabinoids and terpenes are or how they can affect you. Fear not, curious consumers: this guide to Steep Hill’s Strain Fingerprints will walk you through it.

Cannabinoids

THC (∆9-Tetrahydrocannabinol)

  • Strongly psychoactive (induces a euphoric high)
  • Most cannabis strains are bred to contain a high THC content while other cannabinoids occur only in trace amounts
  • Demonstrates promise in treating pain, nausea, sleep and stress disorders, and appetite loss
  • Can cause anxiety and paranoia in some individuals

THCV (Tetrahydrocannabivarin)

  • Strongly psychoactive (induces a euphoric high)
  • More strongly psychoactive than THC, but duration of effects is about half as long
  • Typically occurs in only trace amounts in cannabis
  • Pronounced energetic effects
  • Found to effectively counter anxiety, stress, and panic disorders without suppressing emotion
  • Reduces tremors associated with Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and other neurological disorders
  • Diminishes appetite
  • Stimulates bone growth

CBD (Cannabidiol)

CBDV (Cannabidivarin)

  • Non-psychoactive (does not induce a euphoric high)
  • Demonstrates promise in treating seizures

CBG (Cannabigerol)

  • Non-psychoactive (does not induce a euphoric high)
  • Typically occurs in only trace amounts in cannabis
  • Found to stimulate brain cell and bone growth
  • Demonstrates promise as an anti-bacterial and anti-insomnia medicine

CBC (Cannabichromene)

  • Non-psychoactive (does not induce a euphoric high)
  • Typically occurs in only trace amounts in cannabis
  • Found to be about 10 times more effective than CBD in treatinganxiety and stress
  • Anti-inflammatory and anti-viral properties
  • Stimulates bone growth

CBN (Cannabinol)

  • Mildly to non-psychoactive (does not induce a euphoric high)
  • Typically occurs in only trace amounts in cannabis
  • Occurs as a result of THC degradation
  • Most sedating of all the cannabinoids
  • Demonstrates promise in treating insomnia, glaucoma, and pain

CBL (Cannabicyclol)

  • Non-psychoactive (does not induce a euphoric high)
  • Light converts CBC to CBL

Terpenes

Linalool

Caryophyllene

Myrcene

  • Also found in mango, hops, bay leaves, lemongrass, and eucalyptus
  • Sedating, relaxing effects
  • Demonstrates promise in treating spasmsinflammation, pain, and insomnia
  • Reduces resistance across the blood-brain barrier which facilitates access of other chemicals
  • Enhances psychoactive effects of other compounds such as THC
  • Myrcene levels are higher in indica strains than sativa strains (indicas typically push past 0.5% Myrcene)

Limonene

Pinene

  • Sweet pine aroma
  • Also found in pine needles, rosemary, basil, parsley, and dill
  • Demonstrates promise in treating asthma and inflammation

Humulene

  • Aroma similar to hops
  • Also found in hops and coriander
  • Anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties
  • Diminishes appetite

Terpinolene

Phytol

  • Unlike most terpenes, Phytol’s aroma is very subtle
  • Also found in aged green tea
  • A result of chlorophyll breakdown
  • Sleep aid

D.C. Prohibits Marijuana Testing of Prospective Employees

Testing for Marijuana
Testing kit for detection of Marijuana.

Just a few days ago, the Washington, D.C. Council unanimously approved an emergency resolution prohibiting employers from testing prospective employees for marijuana use as part of the hiring process, unless otherwise required by law. The resolution took effect immediately upon its passage. The D.C. Council’s emergency resolution is based on the position that implementation of D.C. Ballot Initiative 71 (“Initiative 71”), which passed by a 2-to-1 majority of D.C. voters, requires legislation to ensure marijuana users are not stigmatized in the hiring process. There is some question whether the U.S. Congress will attempt to block implementation of Initiative 71.  However, general sentiment appears to be that Congress will not use political capital to thwart Initiative 71.

The D.C. Council’s brevity and unified position in passing this resolution (in addition to a pending D.C. Council bill that would allow for legalized retail sales of marijuana in the District) reflect a Council resolute in acting quickly on marijuana. The underlying reason is most likely momentum. Not only does the Council want to capitalize on the electorate’s overwhelming approval of Initiative 71, but it appears that it would also like the District to embrace recent recreational marijuana advances in Alaska and Oregon.

Wonderful News Chris and Thanks for the information.

Now that Marijuana has been practically de-criminalized, maybe its time to take it of the schedule 1 drug category and re-think and apologize for our past closed mindedness.

Hey thanks from Greg at  Positive Vibrations Medical Marijuana Dispensary.         “Times They Are A Changing.”     😆

Indoor LED Growing Tips

Indoor LED Growing Tips

Now that you have your LED grow light, you must use it properly for optimum growth and yield. The biggest mistakes people make with LEDs are not having enough light and not placing the light at the proper distance. You can expect less than robust growth if you do not provide your working area with enough light coverage. Similarly, incorrect light placement will not have optimal results. Placing a light too close will stunt growth, and too far will cause stretching. Follow the recommended coverage areas listed on the Details Page of each light for optimal light penetration and coverage. Keep in mind that there are many variables to indoor growing, so you may want to add or remove some light depending on your own specifics.

Keeping the proper distance between your LED grow lights and your plants is important to robust photosynthesis and growth. For example, if you get big lights like these shoebox lights, which are generally used outside, then you might want to increase their distance from the plant. Your LED light provides the wavelengths of light your plants need for growth and flowering. G8LED grow lights are formulated to the photosynthetic activation radiation (PAR) wavelengths necessary for plant growth. Plants will reach for the much-coveted light source just like they grow toward the sun in outdoor conditions. The general rule of thumb is to increase the distance between the top of the plant’s canopy and the light source as the light becomes more intense. This means that hydroponic LED grow lights of different power ratings will perform best at different distances. The 240 Watt LED Grow Light should be 16-30 inches from the top of the canopy. Larger lights such as the 450 Watt LED Grow Light should be lowered around 20-30 inches from the top of the canopy. More intense lights such as the 600 Watt LED Grow Light should be kept at 24-26 inches & the 900 Watt LED Grow Light should be kept 26-42 inches from the top of the canopy of your plants.

Since LEDs do not emit great amount of heat like MH/HPS systems, you can better regulate the room temperature and the temperature immediately below your light. Ambient room temperature can be 82 degrees instead of 72 degrees during lighting and can go as low as 60-65 degrees when the lights are out. Be sure to use less water than you would normally use as LED lights emit much less heat than conventional methods. Wait until your soil is a little bit dry before watering again. You should also use 30% less nutrients as compared with MH/HPS when growing with LEDs

Do not work in your grow room when it is supposed to be dark in the OFF cycle. The plants need the dark time to rest and light intrusion will negatively affect their growth. If you must work during the OFF cycle, use green light bulbs for lighting as the green light is reflected by the plants and will not disrupt their sleep schedule.

Vegetative State

During the vegetative state is when you will start to reap the benefits of your LED grow lights. During this period you will save on your electricity bills and get superior growing results if you properly follow the general tips listed in this section. In the vegetative stage, plants need less intense lighting than in the flowering stage.

Vegetative growth is maintained with 16 or more hours of light. You can even keep the plants under 24 hours of light and they will continue to grow in this stage. However, the recommended growth cycle is 18 hours of light during the vegetative growth stage. This light cycle will create an enviornment that mimics the photoperiod in the summer with long days. During the vegetative stage is when you will start to reap the benefits of your LED grow lights. During this period you will save on your electricity bills and get superior growing results. In the vegetative stage, plants need less intense lighting than in the flowering stage. It is during the vegetative growth stage that cloning, transplanting, pruning, and bending are all initiated.

Turn your LED grow light ON for 18 hours a day and then turn the light OFF and leave your plant in the dark for another 6 hours. Your plant will need four to six weeks of this cycle to be ready to start the flowering stage. Pre-flowers are the first indication that the plant is ready to move into the next stage of growth. The pre-flowers grow at branch internodes just behind the leaf spur in around the fourth week of vegetative growth, when the plant is six to eight weeks old. When you start seeing pre-flowers forming this means that the plants are ready to go into the flowering stage. You can continue to grow in the vegetative growth stage or switch to flowering at this point. The pre-flower looks like a regular female flower with white fuzzy pistils. The pre-flowering can take from one to two weeks. Wait to induce flowering until pre-flowers have appeared. Induce flowering by switching your light cycle to 12 hours of uninterupted darkness and 12 hours of light.

Flowering

With LED grow lights we mimic the seasons by changing the light cycle from 18 hours a day to 12 hours. Give your plants 12 hours of uninterrupted darkness and 12 hours of light to induce visible signs of flowering in two weeks or less. Adding more light to the plants also help give bigger flowers and yield. It is recommended to add an all red 90 watt led grow light at this stage for more robust flowering.

Once you have induced flowering for one to two weeks and flowering starts, it can last can last eight weeks or longer. During flowering growth patterns and chemistry changes in the plants (i.e. indoor growing flowering stages). Stems elongate, leaves grow progressively fewer blades and flower formation is rapid at first then slows. Phosphorus and potassim uptake increase to promote floral fomation. Your nutrients should have less nitrogen and more potassium and phosphorus during flowering. Don’t give nutrients too often as this can cause your plant to get nutrient burned. You should use about 30% less nutrients with LED flowering grow lights as compared to MH/HPS systems. Do not overwater, over nutrient and do not harvest too early.

Cloning

LED grow lights are great for cloning plants. Proper usage of LED grow lights will multiply the number of plants you have in a methodical and environmentally friendly way. Cloning require only 2-3 weeks in the vegetative state. Use an 18-20 hour ON cycle for your clone and spray it with water intermittently. As with the vegetative state, when your plants are seedlings the light should be at the recommended hanging distance. As the plants start to grow adjust the light upwards a few inches at a time.

Protect Your LED Grow Lights

Buying a LED grow light is a capital investment for your indoor growing hobby or business. The investment offsets other capital expenditures by eliminating the need for ballasts, reflectors, heat venting systems and airconditioning in addition to lowering operational costs by dramatically decreasing the electricity consumption of your grow room. To protect your investment you should connect your LED grow light to a power stabilizer. The power stabilizer will regulate the voltage coming from your power box and eliminate various power fluctuations which can damage devices. If too many high wattage devices are connected to the same circuit there can be voltage fluctuations which damage power drivers inside the LED lights which power the diodes. This is especially true for growers who use solar energy to power their grow rooms since these systems tend to have power spikes and surges. Power stabilizer are inexpensive and are a great investment to protect your lights and plants, to ensure there is no down time during critical stages of growth. Upgrade your grow room and Grow Green with G8LED technology!

In nature flowering occurs in the fall, after the long hot days of summer. The long nights and short days of autumn signal the start of flowering.

Do not overwater and do not harvest too early.

Flowers initially appear near the top of the terminal growth and gradually develop on lower branches starting at the tips and moving downward. Flowers have white pistils which look like hairs. The pistils are attached at the base to an ovule which is contained in a light green pod called a calyx. Pistil packed calyxes form dense clusters along the stems. These clusters are called a top or cola. The calyxes form develop rapidly for the first four weeks after which they grow at a slower rate. Must of the harvest weight is then put on the last two or three weeks of growth when the calyx formation has slowed which is why it is so important to not harvest too early because the majority of your yield comes the last couple weeks. The pistils will continue to swell and change in color from white to amber to reddish brown. Once this occurs you are ready to harvest your plants.

Proper Distance to Hang Full Spectrum LED Grow Lights

Keeping the proper distance between your full spectrum LED grow lights and your plants is important to robust photosynthesis and growth. Your LED grow light provides the wavelengths of light your plants need for growth and flowering. G8LED grow lights are formulated to the photosynthetic activation radiation (PAR) wavelengths necessary for plant growth. Plants will reach for the much coveted light source just like they grow towards the sun in outdoor conditions. The general rule of thumb is to increase the distance between the top of the plants’ canopy and the light source as the light becomes more intense. This means that hydroponic LED grow lights of different power ratings will perform best at different distances.

The G8-240 should be hung 16-24 inches from the top of the canopy. The G8-450 should be hung at 20-30 inches from the top of the canopy. The G8-600 should be hung at 24-36 inches from the top of the canopy and the G8-900 should be hung 26-42 inches from the top of the canopy of your plants. Maintain these distances as your plants grow in the vegetative stage. For plant stretching increase the distance from the the plants to the light. For shorter, bushier plants decrease the distance. As you raise the light, the plants will reach for the source and grow taller. If you keep the light fixed, the plants will grow tall to a certain point, then grow wider and more dense. Putting lights too close to the plants may be too intense and stunt growth and create discoloration. It is best to follow the recommended distances and adjust as necessary. During flowering the lights can be left at a constant distance.

G8-240 LED Grow Light hanging distance

G8 240 watt LED grow light hanging 24 inches above tomato plants.

Since LED grow lights emit 90% less heat than traditional HID lighting such as high pressure sodium or metal halide bulbs, your plants will not dry out or burn if you happen to place your LED grow light to close to your plants. However, your plants’ growth will be stunted if the light is hanging too low. Within a week you will notice that your plants are not experiencing robust growth and the leaves may become discolored. If you do experience this result, adjust by increasing the distance between your light and the plants. Follow the recommended hanging distances and your plants will thrive in your grow room. You can also check our blog post titled proper distance to hang your LED grow lights.

Choosing The Right Cannabis Strain to Grow

If you have limited height, selecting a plant that finishes at a reasonable size while giving you the qualities you desire should be near the top of your list. Pure Indica strains like many Afghanilandraces tend to stay very tight in growth, with effects typically being more physical.

Areas with strict plant counts typically require growers to finish plants at a larger size to keep medicine on hand in a quantity that suits the patient’s needs. In these situations, vertical height was taken care of in site selection, and a variety that grows big quickly becomes a strong part of the selection process. Some plants take two or three times longer to gain enough stature prior to the budding phase to yield the same quantities as others.

growing cannabisPurple Kief

Sativa dominant strains (ex. Haze or Thai varieties) can get huge fast. During vegetation, the spacing between budding sites can be wide compared to Indicas. Lots of light gets in the plant canopy and there is less trimming labor required at harvest – they can fill out very large with heavy yields. If space is tight, it’s better to avoid Sativa growth traits in your selection.

“Consider your needs carefully and work backwards to your strain selections from there.”

The typical solution for most growers rests in hybrid strains – balanced crosses of desired sativa and indica traits. Some popular hybrids that have surfaced in recent years include Candyland, Platinum Cookies, and Grand Daddy Purple.

It’s recommended that you dedicate the first crop to selecting a mother plant to clone from seed. Some crosses will be more stable than others with seed, and a wide variety can mean a wider array of choices you can make for traits you desire (effects, yield, growth habits, etc.). Once a selection is made, you have your very own strain for as long as you maintain the mother plant.

Still, some patients require more consistent and immediate results. Clones or feminized seeds are a solid choice in this case, given that they are from reputable sources. From here, growers can go straight into bud production if the plants perform as anticipated in terms of size, growth habits, and harvest qualities.

Consider your needs carefully and work backwards to your strain selections from there. If you do, you’ll spend more time kicking back and enjoying you home-grown medicinal relief, rather than battling trying to make your strain selection fit like a round peg in a square hole.

10 Strains for Great Kief

10 Strains That Produce Great Kief

10 Strains for Great Kief

Thanks for this article just  in from Leafly.com,

If there’s one attribute that distinguishes cannabis from its plant-family counterparts, it’s trichomes, the tiny, sticky, white glandular hairs that cover the marijuana flower, giving it a “frosty” appearance. Though many plants and algae have developed trichomes of one type or another to trap insects or protect themselves against herbivores, when it comes to cannabis, trichomes have become one of the most coveted and used parts of the plant.

Why, you might ask? Trichomes are the primary source of terpenes and medicinal cannabinoids in the marijuana plant. Once buds are harvested and dried, these terpenes flake off into a light colored, sand-like substance known as kief.

Since the highest concentration of vital cannabinoids like THC are found inside trichomes, it’s no wonder that growers continuously seek new strains and cultivation techniques that maximize the amount of trichomes on each bud. While grow environment drastically affects the amount of trichomes produced by any cannabis plant, some strains certainly produce more trichomes than others.

To help you find some strains that deliver the best kief, we’ve created this handy little list of 10 trichome-heavy strains.

They Got it wrong again

Howdy, Welcome from Greg at Positive Vibrations Medical Marijuana Dispensary,  To the National headlines saying that marijuana lowers your IQ, I say bunk..  I look for the government/Media to keep this type of propaganda up, always a wet blanket party, but they of course got it wrong as you see from this article in High Times.

Back in 2012, when a Duke University study purported to find a link between chronic marijuana use and IQ decline in teenagers, the mainstream media treated the findings like a dire warning from on high — the definitive last word on the subject, and a troubling impediment for anyone thinking of legalizing the drug for adults. Meanwhile, those of us who understand the way government-funded research tends to drastically over-inflate the dangers of cannabis looked into the details, and found as usual some troubling questions remained unanswered.
For starters, with only 38 people in the study, how reliable could the results be? And what efforts were made to eliminate other confounding factors in IQ loss besides marijuana?
Then, six months after the study came out, the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States — the same journal that published it, offered a new take — this time questioning the way the Duke researchers drew their conclusions. Ultimately, the journals editors stated flatly that “although it would be too strong to say that the results [of the Duke study] have been discredited, the methodology is flawed and the causal inference drawn from the results premature.”
Needless to say, that bold declaration didn’t draw .01% of the media attention that the original, fear-mongering headlines drew. Nor has a new study from the University College of London that offers far more data on the subject of teen marijuana use and IQ scores than the previous Duke study, with decidedly different results.
According to the Washington Post:
The study draws on a considerably larger sample of adolescents than the Duke research – 2,612 children born in the Bristol area of the U.K. in 1991 and 1992. Researchers examined children’s IQ scores at age 8 and again at age 15, and found “no relationship between cannabis use and lower IQ at age 15,” when confounding factors – alcohol use, cigarette use, maternal education, and others – were taken into account. Even heavy marijuana use wasn’t associated with IQ.
“In particular alcohol use was found to be strongly associated with IQ decline,” the authors write. “No other factors were found to be predictive of IQ change.”
Of course, if you’re waiting for an apology from the mainstream media for breathlessly reporting government-funded, highly skewed marijuana research without looking into the details, for the millionth time, don’t hold your breath. Going that long without oxygen will definitely lower your IQ score!
They should be spending their time looking for ways to use the oil from the Marijuana plant to help people deal with pain and disease, but instead they get caught up in the negative and spread half truths without really trying to do a real study.

What is Hash Kief? and How do I Extract it?

What is Hash Kief?

Here is a wonderful article from Leafly.com Knowledge center.

Ever wonder what to call all those tiny, sticky crystals that cover cannabis flower?Well, we’ve got an answer for you: kief.Simply said, kief (also known as dry sift or pollen) refers to the resin glands which contain the terpenes and cannabinoids that make cannabis so unique. While marijuana sans kief still contains cannabinoids, the resin glands that develop on flower buds pack the biggest punch.

Trichomes: It’s All About Protection

GDP Bud

The white hairs covering this cannabis flower are trichomes, or resin glands.

While kief specifically refers to the bulbous, crystal formation on the tip of a gland, the substance itself is just one part of what is called a trichome, or a “hair.”

Many different plants and algae have external trichomes for specific evolutionary purposes. For example, some carnivorous plants rely on sticky trichomes to trap their prey. Other plants, like cannabis, use them as a deterrent to herbivores.

Trichomes on the marijuana plant keep away hungry herbivores by producing an intense psychoactive experience, theoretically disorienting the animal and preventing it from eating the rest of the plant. The resin’s strong, distinct odor also attracts pollinating insects and predators, which might keep herbivore populations at bay.

Extracting Kief

Kief extraction

Without a three-chamber herb grinder to sift and collect kief, the kief is wasted because it just sticks to the grinder itself.

If you like the experience of concentrates but don’t want to break the bank buying expensive wax or extraction equipment, sifting kief might be a great alternative. Due to the high concentration of terpenes and cannabinoids in resin glands, separating kief crystals from plant matter is a great way to consume cannabis while reducing the amount of charred material you take into your body.

Extracting kief is simple. Using a three-chamber herb grinder will help you finely grind your cannabis while letting kief crystals fall through a screen and collect into a small compartment. While two chamber grinders are nice, they often let potent kief go to waste since crystals fall off of the dried herb and just stick to the inside of the grinder.

For extracting larger quantities of kief, using simple silk screening materials will allow you to separate kief from plant matter with the ease of sifting flower.

Framed Speedball Screen Printing Screens

Many people create makeshift sifters using layered screens similar to the ones pictured above. Because kief tends to measure between 75 and 125 microns, it can be difficult to separate all of the resin from the plant materials. To make sure you’re collecting the cleanest kief without unwanted plant matter, stack three to four layers of fine mesh screen one on top of another.

For the best results, home extractors use consecutive sizes of screen and stack them in order from largest to smallest. When buying screens, the number of wires or threads per inch, or the LPI (lines per inch) number is an important thing to remember. The larger the screen, the smaller the LPI number. When it comes to sifting kief, mesh between 80 and 270 LPI tends to work best.

When buying extracted kief at a dispensary or retail store, keep in mind that the purer the kief, the lighter the color will be. Kief that still looks fairly green means that there is still quite a bit of plant matter mixed in, whereas kief that has been well cleaned tends to be more of an off-white color.

What’s the Deal with Hash?

A compressed hash brick. This hash has a dark color because it has been heavily pressurized.

Extracting kief is one of the first steps of making hash. To simply summarize, hash is basically just kief that has been heated and pressurized to form a soft, green ball. Applying heat and pressure to kief changes its composition by rupturing the resin glands. Once the kief ruptured, the overall taste and effects of the product are slightly different. Pressurizing kief also darkens its color; the more pressure you apply, the darker the hash becomes.

Kief may not be the most exciting cannabis product out there, but it still remains one of the most popular and easiest to access. For more information on kief and kief extraction, check out Ed Rosenthal’sBeyond Buds. In the meantime, be sure to pick up a three-chamber herb grinder if you’d like to get the most bang for your buck.

Oregon-Marijuana-Legalization-Measure-91-Has-2014-Elections-Results-Going-For-Recreational-Pot

Howdy and Welcome to the first Positive Vibrations Blog

We are Very Happy that our very first Blog happens to fall on the same day as Oregon Passes the Recreational Marijuana Bill last night.

I’m sure everyone has heard by now that the Recreational Marijuana Bill has Passed, great news for the People of the State of Oregon. Congratulations All.

“Ya Hooooooooooo !!! and Congratulations to All”

Taken from the Oregonian

Oregon joins Washington state and Colorado, the first states to legalize pot for recreational use in 2012. Earlier in the night, Washington, D.C., voters approved a measure allowing residents to possess and grow — but not sell — marijuana. Alaska voters were also considering legalization Tuesday.

Oregon’s Measure 91 took elements from both the Washington and Colorado laws and was primarily financed by out-of-state donors and groups seeking national reform of drug laws. The Yes on 91 campaign collected about $4 million, compared to less than $200,000 raised by the No on 91 effort.

Clatsop County District Attorney Josh Marquis, who opposed marijuana legalization, called the race a “David vs. Goliath.” He said Oregonians aren’t likely to see much of a difference when it comes to law enforcement, which already views marijuana as a low priority.

“Marijuana was very low on the priority list in Oregon,” he said. “And now it will essentially be totally crossed off.”

The measure, which will not take effect until July 1, 2015, allows adults 21 and older to possess 1 ounce in public and up to 8 ounces at home, as well as a variety of other marijuana-infused products.

2014 Midterms: Jeff Mapes and Noelle Crombie analyze Measure 91’s winThe Oregonian’s Jeff Mapes and Noelle Crombie analyze what the passage of Measure 91 means for the future of marijuana in Oregon.

The Oregon Liquor Control Commission will get the job of regulating marijuana production and sales. Tax revenue generated by marijuana will go to public schools; mental health and addiction services; law enforcement; and the Oregon Health Authority. Using marijuana in public or while driving will be prohibited. Current medical marijuana laws won’t change.

Oregon voters rejected marijuana legalization two years ago, and sponsors of Measure 91 hoped this year’s version would be seen as having more regulatory controls than what was on the ballot in 2012.

Unlike the 2012 marijuana initiative, which failed by six percentage points, Measure 91 had a large advertising budget that featured, among others, a retired judge, a retired deputy sheriff and a former top drug addictions official for the state. The campaign deliberately stayed away from any hints of the marijuana culture, even using colors in their signs that avoided any hint of green.

Opponents seized on the wide array of marijuana products  — ranging from pot-laced gummy bears to sugary sodas containing the drug – for sale in Colorado that they said were aimed at enticing youthful consumers.

The measure is “about creating a big marijuana industry,” said Mandi Puckett, a drug education worker who headed the No on 91 campaign.

According to incomplete returns, Measure 91 benefited from overwhelming support in Multnomah County, home to about 20 percent of expected voters statewide.

Ethan Nadelmann, whose organization Drug Policy Alliance was a major funder of the Oregon measure, called the win “fantastic news,” particularly since it came during a year when a presidential election wasn’t on the ballot.

Conventional wisdom suggested waiting until 2016, but Nadelmann’s group pushed ahead this year despite concerns about low voter turnout.

“It’s just a fantastic victory, all the more so because it’s in a non-presidential election year,” Nadelmann said. “I think it bodes very well for 2016 and the years beyond.”

Kevin Sabet, a high-profile opponent of marijuana legalization who traveled to Oregon twice this year with an anti-pot message, said the Measure 91 results mean cannabis opponents need to get even more serious in 2016.

“We are going to redouble our efforts,” he said. “We can now get very serious with potential donors and supporters about how important 2016 is.”

He said opponents will continue to press their case as Oregon drafts rules for the recreational pot industry.

“Even in Oregon the conversation is not over,” he said. “We are going to make sure we are watching the marijuana industry and make sure they don’t get everything they want. This conversation about marijuana is just beginning. It’s certainly not ending.”

Oregon Measure 91 Passes, Oregon Legalizes Recreational Marijuana

Thank you to theweedblog.com

According to multiple media sources, people close to the campaign, and veteran activists in Oregon, Oregon Measure 91 has passed, making Oregon the third state to legalize marijuana. As a lifelong Oregonian, this is a day I have dreaming of for a long, long time. No longer will I have to live in fear of prosecution for consuming a plant that is safer than tobacco and alcohol. No longer will I have to see my friends get arrested for marijuana, especially my minority friends. After multiple attempts, and after a lot of blood, sweat, and tears, Oregon has legalized marijuana.

Wait until 2016 they said. 2014 won’t work they said. Voters rejected marijuana legalization in 2012, so 2014 won’t work either they said. Well ‘they’ can continue to think whatever they want. I will never forget right after Colorado legalized marijuana I was in Denver with a lot of members of the industry and some very high profile organization leaders. I witnessed the two initiators of Measure 91 tell one of those prominent organization leaders their intentions on running a legalization initiative in Oregon in 2014. That organization leader told them that if they waited until 2016, he would offer up his organization’s support. But if they went for 2014 defying his orders…he they ran his thumb across his throat as if to indicate that he would kill it. I wonder how that person fells right now…

The fact of the matter is ‘they’ were all wrong. People who said Oregon couldn’t do it in a midterm election don’t understand Oregon. It’s something I’ve pointed out over and over. For starters, Oregon has a very high voter turnout, even in midterm elections, compared to other states. That’s largely due to the fact that we allow vote by mail here. Also, Oregon elects its Governor in midterm elections, and considering how much both parties need to win the Governor race in Oregon, I knew that they would be doing everything they can to get people to vote, which helped Oregon Measure 91 no doubt. Are Presidential elections better? Of course. But are they so much better in Oregon that we needed to hold off and see tens of thousands more people arrested for marijuana? Nope. Below is a reaction from Tom Angell, the head of Marijuana Majority:

“With Oregon and D.C. coming on board, it’s clear that Colorado and Washington voting to legalize in 2012 was no anomaly. The trend is clear: Marijuana prohibition is coming to an end. As 2016 approaches, we can expect to see many more ambitious national politicians finally trying to win support from the cannabis constituency instead of ignoring and criminalizing us.”

Let Oregon be a lesson to other states. If you have a chance to win on Election Day, go for it, no matter what election year it is. Marijuana prohibition is wrong, and any year that it can be defeated is a year worth trying for. Oregonians will still have to wait awhile until they can legally possess 8 ounces of flower, and grow up to 4 plants per household. However, if Oregon is like Washington and Colorado, enforcement could be suspended any day, as there’s no point in busting someone for something that will be legal soon. Implementation of the legal limits should be July 1, 2015. Stores will take a bit longer, but the delay shouldn’t be as long as it was in Washington. From my friends at Law Enforcement Against Prohibition:

Oregon’s Measure 91, to legalize, regulate and control marijuana, though predicted to be a tight race, won by a handy margin in a race called by the Oregonian early in the night. The new regulatory system will be overseen by the Oregon Liquor Control Commission, in consultation with the State Department of Agriculture and the Oregon Health Authority and will allow adults over 21 to possess up to eight ounces of marijuana and grow up to four plants. DUI and public consumption will still be illegal and localities may ban marijuana businesses through ballot measures. Revenue from the measure will first go to oversight of the industry and then to schools, mental health and drug treatment services, and local and state law enforcement.

Results for Measure 2 in Alaska, the other initiative to legalize, regulate and control marijuana have yet to come in.

“Having spent years as a prosecutor, I know that Oregon will benefit greatly from regulating marijuana, and that the example set here will influence future states in 2015 and beyond,” said Former Assistant State’s Attorney and Oregon resident Inge Fryklund.

Law Enforcement Against Prohibition is a 501(c)3 nonprofit of cops, prosecutors, judges and other law enforcement officials who want to end the war on drugs.

I’ve never been prouder to be an Oregonian than I am right now. This is a truly historic day for Oregon, and I hope that adding my home state to the list of legal states will help build momentum for every other state that is sure to follow. A special thank you to Anthony and Travis for making this happen. I remember meeting you guys a couple of years ago and you expressing to me your desires to end marijuana prohibition in Oregon. That lunch meeting conversation at Bottles has become a reality, and I thank you both from the bottom of my heart. I still reserve the right to talk trash to you guys like you know I like to do, but know that no matter what I say, I bow to your guys’ activism skills! I want to thank everyone else from the campaign, the donors, volunteers, everyone that voted yes on 91, everyone else that made the victory possible, and especially my main man Jay Smoker, whose contributions to Measure 91’s victory will probably never be properly recognized or praised, but as a witness to the behind the scenes, I can honestly say that he deserves to celebrate this victory as much as anyone. I LOVE BEING AN OREGONIAN!!! VICTORY!!!!!!!!!!

“Welcome to “Positive Vibrations”

 “Medical Marijuana Dispensary”

We have submitted for and received our  “Oregon Medical Marijuana License”

Oregon Medical Marijuana License
Find the Right Medication for your Chronic Pain.

through The State of Oregon. We are currently Waiting for the City of North Bend City Council to lift the Moratorium that is set in place until February 11 2015. We are in a holding pattern until then.

We started Positive Vibrations Medical Marijuana Dispensary almost a year ago.

We are dedicated to getting the best quality medicine for our local and out of area patients, we have been working with experts in the Medical Marijuana Community to learn all of the many aspects of this new Industry.

The people of Oregon know that this plant is not dangerous that is why they passed the law to allow the Medical use, and again why they passed laws and regulations to allow Dispensaries because they saw the need for Quality and pest free medicine for the patients enrolled in the Oregon Medical Marijuana Program or aka OMMP.

Our Governments, State, Local, and Federal are watching very closely to what is happening in Washington and Colorado, and this will further regulate the Industry and many changes will occur in the near future, but for now we we strike a vote for change in the Positive way people are looking at what once was thought to be a Dangerous drug.

The  Federal Government still lists Marijuana as a schedule 1 Drug right along side Heroine, Cocaine and Methamphetamine, but with the Positive change sentiment of the entire nation we will eventually see this change, soon enough the real truth will come out about the benefits of Marijuana and  the oil it produces, but for now we have gained a few of the rights back that were denied for years.

Thank You and Positive Vibrations to you All   😆
